Why permutations, not combinations? 🖖

A Stargate address isn't a set of symbols, it's a sequence — chevron 1 locks first, chevron 2 second, and so on, so dialing the same seven glyphs in a different order traces a completely different physical rotation path and, in the show's own logic, a different destination. That's exactly the distinction between permutations and combinations: choosing which 7 of 39 glyphs to use is a combination problem, but the dial-in itself is a permutation, and there are 7! = 5,040 ways to reorder any given set of 7 symbols. That factor of 5,040 is why P(39,7) dwarfs C(39,7) — order isn't a technicality here, it's the entire mechanism the fictional gate network runs on.

The seventh glyph is 'you are here' 🖖

In the show's logic only six glyphs pick your destination; the seventh is the point of origin — a fixed symbol identifying the gate you're dialing from, like a return address on an envelope. That's why the panel shows two counts: total addresses P(39, 7), and destination variants P(38, 6), which ignore the origin slot. The neat consequence: the total is exactly 39 times the destination count, since any of the 39 glyphs could fill that origin marker.

Seven chevrons barely cover the galaxy 🖖

The gate network spans the Milky Way, which holds an estimated 10¹¹ to 4×10¹¹ stars. Yet a 7-glyph address yields only P(39, 7) ≈ 7.75×10¹⁰ possibilities — fewer than the galaxy's stars, so seven chevrons can't give every star its own address. Switch the tool to 8 chevrons and the count jumps by a factor of 32 to about 2.48×10¹², finally outrunning the stellar census. That extra chevron isn't decoration; it's what makes the address space big enough.

Example problems

  • 7-glyph (stable) - The standard 7-symbol address — 6 destination glyphs plus your point of origin — is the backbone of the Stargate network. From a pool of 39 symbols there are 77,519,922,480 possible ordered addresses: swap two glyphs' positions and you dial a different planet entirely.
  • Earth - Abydos - The very first gate address dialed on screen: Earth to Abydos, the desert world from the 1994 film and SG-1 pilot. Same 7-glyph structure as any standard address — the order locked in chevron by chevron is what actually encodes the destination.
  • 8-glyph (long range) - Add an 8th glyph for a long-range address and the address space explodes to 2,480,637,519,360 possible orderings — 32× larger than the standard 7-symbol network, since each extra chevron multiplies the count by one more available symbol.
